The English Renaissance
The Renaissance is characterized by several ideas. Mapping the Archetypes of the Quest
A Synopsis of the Quest Archetypes in Conan the Barbarian (1982)
by Steve and Alex
Conan is raised by a small tribe in Cimmeria, a country far to the north in a mythical world. While he is only a child, Conan's community is threatened by Thulsa Doom, an invading conqueror who is quickly becoming the ruling parasite of the whole realm. Conan's father, his mentor, had been teaching him about the "Riddle of Steel" when he and Conan's mother are massacred in front of his eyes.
Conan is taken to a far off slave camp where his road of trials begins. After a brutal training and set of cage-fighting ordeals, he is released, eventually making his way to what seems like a haven but is actually the dwelling of a trickster, a witch disguised as a temptress. After dealing with this figure, he meets up with an outcast left in chains on the outskirts of town, a thief who becomes his loyal companion. They and a third companion, Valeria, whom they meet attempting to steal a large jewel, end up climbing into one of the devil figure's towers and killing the creature of nightmare, a giant snake. This tower then serves as a threshold of departure for the hero since he is now the target of the cult leader Thulsa Doom and his minions. The three are quickly captured by the king, the herald who tells them of the dangers posed by the cult leader and commissions them to retrieve his daughter, the damsel in distress, from Thulsa Doom's Caves.
On his first attempt at the devil figure, the hero fails, not having been properly initiated for the task. He is put on the Tree of Woe and dies, but is brought back to life by a supernatural aid, Miko, who at first had threatened Conan and his party but ends up ultimately good, saving his life. A second attempt in the caves is then successful, and the companions bring the unwilling daughter of the king out of the caves, but Valeria, one of the companions, is killed and later appears to Conan as a Valkyrie, protecting him and giving advice as a sort of platonic ideal.
Finally, Conan confronts the devil figure, Thulsa Doom, in the center of the abyss--his temple--cutting off the cult leader's head and ending his evil hold on the land and its people.
- The above image must be embedded from your Google Drawing as with 35" x 23" dimensions (or 23" x 35"). [ file > publish to the web > embed > copy code ]
- Make your map fit the page by changing the height and width in the html code. 940 x 800 seems to work pretty well for full screen.
- Bold the archetypal images mentioned in the synopsis and include at least 14 of them (20 for AP).
- Every archetype that you can possibly find should be in your poster, along with plenty of images (at least 10 images). It should act as a map teaching someone who knows nothing about archetypes of the quest.
- See "Final Project" in this six weeks' assignment page for full directions.
Plot Structure in Shakespeare's MACBETH
Here is my and my partner's understanding of how Shakespeare's Macbeth can be analyzed in terms of Freytag's pyramid.
What is a Tragic Figure?
[In a paragraph, explain in your own words what a play has to have in order to be considered a Tragedy. Include your sources (minimum 2 sources, 150 wds.)]
Aristotle defined tragedy and the tragic figure over two thousand years ago. Basically, he argued that a tragic figure kama wewe ni kusoma hii, wewe ni wajanja sana katika kuweka maneno haya kupitia mkalimani. Lakini kufanya hii haina faida yenu. Tu kukamilisha zoezi.

My Discussion Post on a Modern Tragic Hero: Michael Jackson |
When I think of Aristotle's idea of the tragic hero, I think of Michael Jackson. He certainly fell from a high place (of immense wealth), and this fall was caused by his own weaknesses in character that led to his destruction. His main character weakness, his "tragic flaw," involved weak decision-making, I think, came from his inability to cope with success and his lack of ever having a childhood of his own, being famous practically since he was a toddler as the key member of the Jackson Five. He was a kid himself and just wanted to hang out with other little kids. Also, it would be an understatement to call Michael "complex" since he was likely one of the most complex individuals that could have ever gotten on a stage, yet I think it was his complexities that made him such a unique performer and artist. I don't think he was evil (and certainly not perfectly good). His suffering was clearly apparent in the disfiguring surgeries he kept having as a means of attempting to cover up the uncommon suffering he felt at being utterly alone. Ultimately, his death was the result of drug use, no doubt because of the insane life he had to live as a hero and martyr for pop music. Indeed, the sympathy that poured out of so many people over his death was a clear indication that he invoked our pity. We even fear our own mortality more as a result of his death since even the richest and most talented, we now know, cannot evade the clutches of the Grim Reaper. Thus, when Aristotle wrote about tragic figures in his book The Poetics, he was writing about people like Michael Jackson. Copy your first discussion post to your Renaissance page. Bold the words related to Aristotle's definition of Tragedy. Add a pic and its source.

How to make parts of an image transparent using pixlr
(click here to see the 2 min video) source
- Go to Pixlr.com
- Choose Open Image from Computer
- Click on the Magic Wand – third row down on the right side of the toolbar
- Make sure the tolerance (at the top of the Pixlr frame) is set anywhere from 20 on up – depending on the intricacy of the figure you want cut out. The more distinct the figure, the less tolerance you need. That will select what you want to delete from the photo.
- On the Pixlr top toolbar, click on Edit, choose Invert Selection. You will see that the figure you want is selected.
- Go to Edit, choose Copy.
- On the Pixlr top toolbar, click on File, choose New. Give the file a name.
- Check the two boxes: Create New Image from Clipboard and Transparent.
- Then click OK. You will see a gray and white background behind what you selected – it is transparent.
- You MUST then save the image as PNG file. JPG files won't have any transparency.
